The Glenn L. Martin Maryland Aviation Museum is located at Martin State Airport. It was founded in 1990 and operates privately without any government funding. By offering the public a thorough overview of the history of aviation in an interactive, yet thorough, manner, the Aviation Museum has grown to become one of the premier authorities in this field. With both US Navy and Army certification, the museum experience is authentic.
Although general aviation is central to the museum's exhibitions, the Glenn L. Martin Maryland Aviation Museum has at its core dedicated its offering to the promotion and preservation of aviation and space exploration in the State of Maryland - more specifically to the contribution made by the Martin Company in the advancement of aeronautics in the USA. The museum is run on a small skeleton staff and this is buffered by the many volunteers and generous donors who do this all for the love of aviation history.
Public education is Glenn L. Martin Maryland Aviation Museum's main aim. Although it operates as a traditional museum, there is much more on offer in terms of display items than many of their peers. Some of the more exciting displays include rockets, wind tunnels and an assortment of restored aircraft. The displays are also spread out chronologically so that members of the public can see step by step how aircrafts have been evolving over time - from the early prototypes, all the way through to the state of the art machines still in use today.
These displays run in tandem with monthly guest speakers. These speakers are leaders in the fields of engineering, exploration and other related aeronautical fields and offer visitors to the Glenn L. Martin Maryland Aviation Museum firsthand knowledge that cannot be found in text books. These lectures are open to the public and cater for individuals or larger groups.
Also on display are over 200,000 photographs, original film footage, research models and no less than thirteen original historic aircraft. The Glenn L. Martin Maryland Aviation Museum is an incredible outing for those who are interested in the area's rich aviation history and even those without any prior knowledge or interest will benefit from an outing. The museum has begun to spread its offering around other parts of the USA and already there is a significant interest in what the Glenn L. Martin Maryland Aviation Museum has to offer.
